This study investigates the integration of the rice wholesale market in Hyderabad, Sindh, with a focus on pricing structures, market connectivity, and stakeholder dynamics. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, primary data were collected through KoboCollect from 120 respondents, including wholesalers and retailers; while secondary data covered rice production trends in Pakistan from 2010-11 to 2024-25. Statistical analysis revealed a significant upward trend in rice production until 2021-22, followed by a sharp decline due to climatic adversities and natural disasters. Unit root tests confirmed that price series across Hyderabad, Karachi, Jacobabad, and Larkana were non-stationary at levels but became stationary after first differencing, indicating integration of order one [I(1)]. Johansen co-integration results demonstrated that Hyderabad maintains a long-run equilibrium relationship with Karachi and Larkana but not with Jacobabad. Multivariate analysis further confirmed the existence of multiple co-integrating vectors, suggesting broader market cohesion across the four regions. Overall, results indicate strong market linkages, particularly between Hyderabad and Karachi (85% integration), while weaker ties persist with Jacobabad. Price changes were found to be driven by demand-supply dynamics and government policies, with 100% of respondents reporting daily price fluctuations and 99% relying on trader communication for price information. Findings also highlight the dominance of wholesalers (91.6%) generally older, more experienced, and higher-income while the Basmati variety remains the most traded rice type. The study concludes that the Hyderabad rice wholesale market is well-integrated with national markets, though regional disparities exist, and offers insights for improving market performance, addressing volatility, and strengthening farmer-market linkages through infrastructure and policy support.
